Bottled-Water-Mania

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

I recently stumbled upon a startling figure: Americans spent nearly $15 billion on bottled water in 2007, up from $11 billion the year before.  That is more than the amount American spent on iPods and movie tickets!  Why would American spend so much on something as simple as water.  Water is the simplest of beverages and it is delivered to every household in America for one ten thousandth of the cost of bottled water.

Why do Americans continue to purchase more and more wasteful bottled water every year despite bottled water being no safer than tap water?  The answer is simple: Marketing.

Water bottles have been showing up more and more in our favorite television programming.  Fiji Water frequently appears of the show Brothers & Sisters while Poland Spring water is a common prop on the set of The Office.  At Whole Foods, the number one item sold by unit is bottled water, above all other food sold at their supermarkets.  We always hear complaints about the cost of gasoline, but why has bottled water consumption increased so much despite it being 3 to 4 times the cost of gasoline.  The intense marketing campaigns of the bottled water corporations have us mindlessly buying water in plastic bottles over and over again.  Americans need to realize that we can help save the environment and our paychecks by installing in-home water filtration systems, for a fraction of the cost of buying bottled water.

Live Near A Golf Course? Go Buy A Filter!

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Golf is one of the most popular sports in America.  Everywhere you go, golf courses are popping up.  Many people enjoy this sport and the beautiful landscape of the courses, but this all comes at the expense of the environment and water supplies.  There are over 18,000 golf courses in the United States, more than half of the world’s golf courses.  These golf courses cover more than 1.7 million acres of land which require plenty of water to irrigate. 4 billion gallons of water EVERY DAY are used to irrigate golf courses in the United States alone!

With this extreme usage of public water supplies, the golf courses use pesticides and fertilizers that run off into the surrounding environments and communities.  Studies have found that farmers and greens keepers have an unusually high percentage of lymphoma related deaths, which could also be true for the surrounding communities.  Since golf is a $49 billion dollar industry in the US, lawmakers have much less incentive to regulate the environmental impacts of the sport.  But, until the government applies more strict regulation to the golf industry, the best way to keep the public safe is to filter all their public drinking and bathing water.

More on Chlorinated Water

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Chances are that your public drinking water has most likely come from either a pond, lake or a stream.  These sources of water contain organic material from decaying algae or dead leaves.  When water is treated with chlorine to kill harmful pollutants, the chlorine also attaches itself to these organic compounds to create organochlorines.  An organochlorine that is formed when chlorine attaches to methane is called chloroform, which is carcinogenic.

This happens because almost always when chlorine attaches itself to organic material, it increases the toxicity of the original organic compound.  Methane is harmless alone, but when a chlorine is attached, it forms a trihalomethane with is a toxic compound.

These organochlorines are naturally produces in small amounts in the environment, but the levels have risen significantly due to the chlorination process in purifying municipal water.  Humans are being exposed to higher and higher levels of these toxic compounds because it is pumped directly into our homes and offices.  With the simple addition of a KDF Media water filter, you can protect yourself and your family for up to 6 years from water chlorination and other harmful compounds in your drinking water.

Pollution in Drinking water

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Did you know that 7 million Americans become sick every year from contaminated drinking water?  This contamination, in some cases, can even be lethal.  Contamination of drinking water is due to old pipes and outdated water treatment facilities.  These alarming rates of water contamination are a call to filter all municipal water sources.

A recent study of 19 US cities has shown that public water supplies pose a risk to the citizens due to the poor conditions of the water infrastructure.  Much of the piping and water treatment facilities are using century old technology.  These old pipes leak and become contaminated with pollutants and bacteria and the old ages filtration systems often fail to remove pesticides, arsenic and other pollutants.  The amount of untreated sewage that enters the environment every year is enough to fill up the Empire State Building and the Madison Square Garden.

Along with these pollutants, a recent study has found that 41 million Americans are exposed to prescription drugs in our drinking water.  The levels of these prescription drugs is far below the prescribed dosages, but the long term effects of these drugs is still unknown.  Studies have found that this long term, low level exposure to prescription drugs has alarming effects on human cells and wildlife.  By using a New Wave Enviro filter, you can filter these contaminants out of your drinking water while saving money at the same time.
