12 Students Become Ill After Drinking Aquafina

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Most people who drink bottled water do so under the conception that bottled water is much safer than tap water.  But as 12 students from Santa Clara, CA found out, bottled water may still be harmful to your health.  The students purchased their Aquafina, a brand owned by PepsiCo and one of the most popular brands in the world, from a vending machine in their junior high school.

The scare prompted a visit from the FBI hazardous materials team who found the students suffering from headaches, nausea, and dizziness.  This isn’t the first time people have gotten sick from bottled water, there are dozens of cases reported every year.  The water the children drank appeared a little cloudy and tasted odd.  Luckily for these students, they only had to be briefly hospitalized and were later released.

The most shocking part of this story is that this was a very “reputable” bottled water manufacturer.  If one of the most popular bottled water distributors can have contaminated water, this means that the less reputable manufacturers are even more likely to have contaminants in their product.  This story only reinforces the fact that bottled water is not a safe source of water and that a simple 10 stage water filter will give you safe drinking water every time for a fraction of the price.

A Few Steps to a Waste Free Lunch

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

As you take your break from work today to sit and eat your lunch, take notice of how much waste you generate every day, just from eating.  1/3 of the waste disposed of in the US is from packaging.  If you noticed that you are throwing your paper bag, plastic Ziploc bags, or your plastic bottles away every day, there is a way to reduce all of this waste to zero!

The easiest thing to stop throwing away every lunch is your paper lunch bag.  They will most likely end up in a landfill and promote the deforestation of our woodlands, which, in turn, reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses we emit into the atmosphere.  A reusable bamboo bag is the perfect substitute to your brown paper lunch bags.  Bamboo is a very sturdy material that is fast and easy to grow.  It also does not do damage to the soil it grows in, leaving fertile soil behind.

You can also ditch your Ziploc bags for reusable stainless steel lunch-ware.  Stainless steel lunch-ware will last almost forever and their production does little damage to the environment unlike their plastic counterparts.  While we are on the topic of stainless steel, there is no longer any need for your plastic water bottles every day that you will most likely end up throwing out where they can be sent to a landfill.  Stainless steel water bottles from New Wave Enviro last almost forever and are super light and durable.  This will help reduce the millions of bottles of water Americans waste every year.

While the task of cleaning up the planet may seem overwhelming, these are some simple ways for you to help out in your every day life.  Who knows, you may just start a trend at work.

The Other Costs of Bottled Water

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

A first study of it’s kind by the Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment, and Security has taken a look at the energy required to produce a bottle of water.  According to the study, it requires 2,000 times more energy to produce a single liter of bottled water than a liter of tap water.  This would explain why something that should cost only pennies now costs $1.50 for a bottle.  There is so much waste involved with the production of this product that is consumed merely for convenience.  The study estimated that an extra 32 to 54 million barrels of oil are used every year to produce the plastic and to ship the bottles across the country.  Over the past 30 years, bottled water consumption has increased from about 6 liters annually to 116 liters, an astounding 2,000% increase.

With the world beginning to feel the effects of energy shortages, we need to find more money saving ideas and energy saving products.  If we all could find a way to remove these needless plastic bottles of water from our lives, we could be saving the environment from harmful carbon emissions and saving a limited resource.  By purchasing a reusable stainless steel water bottle from New Wave and a 10 stage filter, not only will you be saving yourself some serious cash, you will be saving the costs imposed on the environment.

Why Do YOU Drink Bottled Water?

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Why do people continue to purchase bottled water from the corporations?  Is it because it is cleaner? No, we know that most bottled water companies pump their “fresh” water from public water supplies.  Is it because it tastes better?  No, blind taste tests of bottled water and tap water show that people have no preference between the two.  Is it because it is safer?  No, 1/3 of bottled water was found to contain the same contaminants that people try and avoid by not drinking tap water.  Is it less expensive?  No, it actually costs about 10,000 times the price of tap water at home.  It is even more expensive than gasoline.

Then why do consumers continue to purchase a product with little benefits and a whole lot of environmentally destructive baggage?  Bottled water is purely a gluttonous luxury.  People drink bottled water out of the pure convenience that they do not have to carry around a bottle or to simply avoid using a public water fountain.  I find it embarrassing that the US consumes 8 billion bottles of water a year, leaving 8 billion plastic, non-renewable bottles to be disposed.  If you are reading this and continue to purchase bottled water, it is time to stop and ask yourself why it is necessary to spend 10,000 times the normal price for water only to hurt the environment simply for your convenience.
