Make Halloween Less Frightening for the Environment

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

American consumers are expected to spend $3.12 billion on candy, costumes, and various other ghastly goodies for this upcoming Halloween.  Everyone loves big piles of candy, but think about the big piles of empty, crumpled wrappers that build as we eat through our trick-or-treating stash.  Also don’t be surprised to see trash cans filled with one-time use Halloween costumes, a sight that may be more horrifying than the most gruesome Halloween outfit you saw the night before.  So why not go “Green” this Halloween?  Below are a few tips to put together an eco-friendly Halloween:

-Recycle old clothes into a one-of-a-kind costume.  Don’t forget to include such other items as old bedding or jewelry to add some spice to your personal costume.

-Use re-usable utensils and plates, especially if you plan on throwing a Halloween bash at your own home.

-Shop for pumpkins, apples and other seasonal items at your local farmers market.  Farmers markets sell vegetables that are grown locally, whereas vegetables sold at super markets may travel thousands of miles from farms to get there.

-Instead of using plastic bags or paper to collect trick-or-treat candy, use recyclable bags, or, of course, your own pillowcase.

Also, don’t forget that chaperoning your children as they collect Halloween candy in your neighborhood is a tiring workout.  Make sure to bring a water bottle with you to prevent dehydration.  New Wave Enviro provides a festive Stainless Steel water bottle that may be the perfect companion for your Halloween adventure:

Harmful Effects of Chlorine

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

In the U.S. and most countries abroad, law mandates that chlorine be used to disinfect domestic drinking and bath water. Chlorine is a powerful oxidizer and not only kills microorganisms, but also oxidizes and attacks the DNA in all living matter. This can cause damage that will eventually result in premature aging and cancer.  Below are some quotations from scholarly sources about the harmful effects of drinking and showering in water contaminated with chlorine.

“Cancer risk among people drinking chlorinated water is 93% higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine.”- Dr. J.M Price, MD., Saginaw Hospital.

“The cause of arteriosclerosis and resulting heart attacks and strokes is none other than the ubiquitous chlorine in our drinking water.”-Janet Raloff, Science News.

“In the vast majority of cases where germ-free water is required for pubic supply, or in the swimming pool, the process of disinfection will involve the use of chlorine in one form or another.”-Dr. A.T. Palin, Ph.D, Chemistry and Control of Modern Chlorination.

“Skin absorption of contaminant has been underestimated and ingestion may not constitute the sole or even primary route of exposure.”-Consumer Reports Books, Is Your Water Safe to Drink?

New Wave Enviro’s drinking water, bath, and shower filters dechlorinate water in just minutes.  Filtering out chlorine is now an essential step in achieving a healthy, toxic-free lifestyle.  Go to http://newwaveenviro.com/ to further educate yourself about the harmful effects of chlorine and learn how New Wave Enviro filters eliminate the threat.

High Altitude and Dehydration

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

It’s difficult to believe that we are highly susceptible to dehydration while skiing and snowshoeing, what with being in the presence of so much frozen H2O and all.   Not only are we losing fluids through vigorous activity on the slopes, but also by being at high altitude levels where less oxygen is available and our bodies are forced to work harder.

When dehydrated, exercise makes us fatigued more quickly.  I’m talking real fatigue, not just shortness of breath.   Dehydration compounded by the low vapor pressure of oxygen forces our blood chemistry to change, making it more acidic and harder to absorb what little oxygen is available.   Subsequently, altitude sickness or “acute mountain sickness” ensues, as we begin experiencing splitting headaches and nausea.  When the sickness is prolonged, we become afflicted with such life-threatening symptoms as pulminary edema (fluid in the lungs) and cerebral edema (swelling of the brain).

Sounds unpleasant, right?  Well, thankfully if we just stay hydrated, this whole aforementioned mess can be avoided.  Next time you prepare for a snow-filled adventure, make sure a water bottle is on your checklist.
