Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Water utilities have discovered that an alarming 315 pollutants contaminate the tap water Americans drink, according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG).  More than half of the detected chemicals are not subject to health or safety regulations, 49 of which have been found in higher levels than deemed safe by the Federal Government.  According to the EWG, 53.6 million Americans are exposed to these dangerous chemicals!  Below is a list of the EWG’s 10 lowest rated water utilities.

A Few Simple Ways to Live Green

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

With all the news of pollution, increasing carbon emissions, melting ice caps, etc., it is easy to feel overwhelmed with this environmental crisis.  These problems facing our planet can make you feel helpless in the fight to save Earth.  But there are plenty of simple ways we can change our daily lifestyles that actually do make a difference.  If you can convince a few friends to live this clean lifestyle and they convince a few of their friends, before you know it, you are actually making a difference in the world.  Here are a few simple tips to help live a cleaner lifestyle:

When driving on the highway, just slow down a bit.  Did you know that driving 60 mph instead of 70 mph (along with saving you from speeding tickets) will save you 4 mpg in fuel economy.  Accelerating  and braking too hard both cause more gas consumption.  Not only will you be driving green, you will also be driving safe.  Along with this, try and ride your bike or walk to work a couple days of the week and burn some calories.  If work isn’t within walking distance for you, you can also try carpooling or mass transit. Grouping errands together to just one trip also saves wasted miles driven in your car and frees up spare time.

Using your tap water instead of bottled water is a great way to cut back on wasteful packaging; the New Wave Premium 10 Stage Drinking Water Filter offers a clean, efficient way to cut demand on water.  Did you know that a leaky toilet can waste up to 200 gallons a day?  When washing your clothes, if possible, use cold water instead of hot water.  Turning off the water when brushing your teeth and when shaving are also some other great ways to prevent waste.  Again, with the help of some friends, these are some simple ways that you can actually make a difference in the world.

FDA to miss third deadline on BPA ruling

Monday, March 15th, 2010

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has said it will miss its third self-imposed deadline on letting consumers know whether it is safe to use products with BPA.  The repeated delays have angered health care advocates who consider the chemical a threat to human health.

Well known health advocacy organizations such as the Environmental Working Group say evidence of the chemical’s risk is “overwhelming” after having conducted countless tests to measure consumer exposure to BPA.  The chemical, which is found in 93% of Americans tested, and 90% of newborns, is believed to interrupt the body’s endocrine system, even at extremely low doses.  Studies have linked BPA to cell changes that lead to breast and testicular cancer, obesity, sexual dysfunction, neural and behavioral problems, diabetes and heart disease.

Dozens of scientists who have worked with the chemical have called on the FDA to ban it in food contact items. They are especially concerned about fetuses and newborns whose development is believed to be especially sensitive to the chemical’s effects. BPA leaches into food and liquid when heated.

Thankfully, New Wave Enviro offers a full line of BPA free personal drinking water bottle options, including ones made from the popular Eastar ™ resin and Seriously Safe Stainless Steel materials.

What’s in Your Water?

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Take a look at this interesting article about the quality of your local drinking water supply from The Practical Guide to Healthier Living.  The contents of this article may urge you to find a clean, bacteria-free source of water immediately.  But wait!  New Wave has a solution; the Premium 10 Stage Water Filter.

New Wave’s Premium 10 Stage Water Filter has the necessary means to create a bacteriostatic environment.  With its KDF Media filter, it removes such harmful substances as chlorine, lead, mercury, iron, and hydrogen sulfide from water supplies.  The filter also has a carbon component which removes unwanted contaminants, as well as ion exchange resin.

Why is this system better than others?

A. The Premium 10 Stage Filter contains the premier, patented, 10-Stage contaminant removing filter. It lasts three times as long as the common carbon block filters (1500 gallons versus 500 gallons).

B. It filters contaminants by bonding the contaminants with the media inside the filter.

C. If a filter is not changed in a timely manner it will dump contaminants into the water at concentrations higher than the original tap water. New Wave Enviro will remind you by post card when it is time to change your cartridge so that “dumping” does not occur. Simply send us your warranty card so we can remind you.

D. Its’ price is the most reasonable and affordable when compared to other major brands that remove as many contaminants as the New Wave Premium Filter removes.
