Traces of BPA Found in Paper Receipts
A new report by The Environmental Working Group (EWG) shows that paper receipts from grocery stores and gas stations contain BPA. Out of all the paper receipts tested, over 40% showed traces of the toxin. A similar study conducted at the University of Missouri discovered that the concentration of BPA found on receipts was 250 to 1,000 times the amount in canned food.
Concern over the chemical has primarily been concentrated on food and beverage containers and the consequences of ingesting the toxin. The EWG said retail workers carry an average of 30 percent more BPA in their bodies than other adults, but that it is “unclear how much BPA-coated receipts contribute to people’s total exposure.” Scientists have not determined how much of a receipt’s BPA coating can transfer to people’s skin and from there into the body by ingesting BPA through food or by touching their mouths. Though the effects of skin exposure have not yet been explored, experts claim that the market will respond and consumers will see BPA-free receipts in the near future.
It seems that nearly every few weeks there is a new development regarding our knowledge of BPA. As people first became aware of dangers associated with BPA, New Wave Enviro took a pro-active step by introducing a line of BPA-free products such as the 600ml Seriously Safe Stainless Steel water bottle.
