Plastic Water Bottle Sales “Evaporating”

Bottled water sales dropped in 2009 for the first time in 5 years.  Bottled water companies are no longer fooling consumers into believing their product comes from some pristine, untouched stream or lake deep in the Swiss Alps.  While it is healthy to stay hydrated, what we’re drinking in a lot of cases is from the tap, sometimes filtered, sometimes not.  There are several additional factors behind the slip in sales, the most well-known being the environmental impact of bottled water, as nearly 90 percent of the bottles are not recycled and wind up in landfills where it takes thousands of years for the plastic to decompose.

Critics of bottled water are going as far as calling it the “new cigarette.”  The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Barbara and Salt Lake City have asked employees not to use bottled water or banned city spending on it. Chicago added a 5-cent tax to each bottle.  In addition, celebrity chef Mario Batali banned the bottle in his fanciest restaurant, Del Posto.  News of this spread like a wildfire throughout the upscale restaurant community, as other owners soon followed suit and banned bottles in their establishments as well.

The most notable substitute for one-time use plastic water bottles, reusable drinking water bottles, have garnered a lot of attention over the years.  These days it seems everyone either has or wants a reusable drinking water bottle.  If you’re still searching for the ideal water bottle, look no further, because New Wave Enviro offers a plethora of reusable and recyclable drinking water bottles.  These sleek and sanitary bottles are perfect for any active person who needs their water to go.

I hadn’t heard about Mario Batali banning water bottles in his restaurant! My dad watches him all the time on Food Network :) . I think it’s a positive move for restaurant owners to ban bottles, as well as cities raising the taxes on bottles. More people really should switch to reusable water bottles. There would be so much laste plastic waste in landfills! Not to mention the water would be way better for you :) .

    Thanks for posting!
