The Other Costs of Bottled Water

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

A first study of it’s kind by the Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment, and Security has taken a look at the energy required to produce a bottle of water.  According to the study, it requires 2,000 times more energy to produce a single liter of bottled water than a liter of tap water.  This would explain why something that should cost only pennies now costs $1.50 for a bottle.  There is so much waste involved with the production of this product that is consumed merely for convenience.  The study estimated that an extra 32 to 54 million barrels of oil are used every year to produce the plastic and to ship the bottles across the country.  Over the past 30 years, bottled water consumption has increased from about 6 liters annually to 116 liters, an astounding 2,000% increase.

With the world beginning to feel the effects of energy shortages, we need to find more money saving ideas and energy saving products.  If we all could find a way to remove these needless plastic bottles of water from our lives, we could be saving the environment from harmful carbon emissions and saving a limited resource.  By purchasing a reusable stainless steel water bottle from New Wave and a 10 stage filter, not only will you be saving yourself some serious cash, you will be saving the costs imposed on the environment.

Why Do YOU Drink Bottled Water?

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Why do people continue to purchase bottled water from the corporations?  Is it because it is cleaner? No, we know that most bottled water companies pump their “fresh” water from public water supplies.  Is it because it tastes better?  No, blind taste tests of bottled water and tap water show that people have no preference between the two.  Is it because it is safer?  No, 1/3 of bottled water was found to contain the same contaminants that people try and avoid by not drinking tap water.  Is it less expensive?  No, it actually costs about 10,000 times the price of tap water at home.  It is even more expensive than gasoline.

Then why do consumers continue to purchase a product with little benefits and a whole lot of environmentally destructive baggage?  Bottled water is purely a gluttonous luxury.  People drink bottled water out of the pure convenience that they do not have to carry around a bottle or to simply avoid using a public water fountain.  I find it embarrassing that the US consumes 8 billion bottles of water a year, leaving 8 billion plastic, non-renewable bottles to be disposed.  If you are reading this and continue to purchase bottled water, it is time to stop and ask yourself why it is necessary to spend 10,000 times the normal price for water only to hurt the environment simply for your convenience.

Ah, The Benefits of Filtered Water

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

As if saving literally hundreds of dollars every year isn’t reason enough to stop drinking bottled water and start using your own 10 stage filter, here are the many health related reasons to buy your own reusable water bottle and filter.

Drinking pure water is the first step in any healthy diet, especially for a child’s proper nutrition while their bodies are developing.  According do the EPA, drinking water that contains lead causes approximately 480,000 learning disorders in children every year in the United States!  Pregnant women must also drink lead free water to prevent serious birth defects.  It is absolutely essential to have the cleanest source of water because there are more than 2100 contaminants possible present in municipal tap water, including poisons.  Some types of cancer can be associated with these toxins found in tap water.  Because water may come from a bottle at a store does not mean that the water is clean and municipal treatment plants cannot always control dangerous forms of bacteria.  Due to this, the only way to absolutely assure that your drinking water is clean is to have a 10 stage filter at your family’s water tap.

Canada Taking a Step in the Right Direction

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities has moved to encourage towns and cities in our neighbor to the north to phase out the selling of bottled water on municipal property.  Although the resolution passed Saturday by the federation holds no weight as far as the legality of selling bottled water, this is a step in the right direction to eliminate the wastefulness caused by bottled water production.  The energy to discard the plastic bottles has become too burdensome on the local governments of Canada, who bear the cost of disposing of the recyclable bottles that end up in landfills more often than not.  “It’s not a ban, we just try to educate our citizens that the water that you pay for in your city is good — use it,” said Jean Perrault, the mayor of Sherbrooke, Quebec.

Not only is this an expense on the local governments of Canada, but it is an expense on the individuals who purchase the bottled water.  “Buying a bottle of water costs approximately $2.50. The cost to produce water in the city? I can fill up 6,000 little bottles for the price of $2.50,” Perrault said.

Canada has become a utopia for living a bottled-water-free life.  Already 27 Canadian municipalities have stopped the sale of bottled water on their properties.  21 of the universities and colleges in Canada have also created bottled-water-free zones.  As citizens of America, we should demand that our politicians follow suit and continue this trend of eliminating the wastefulness of bottled water.

Sick of your brown paper lunch bag and looking for a litter free way to bring your lunch to work?  New Wave Enviro has a reusable lunch bag for every environmentalist looking to limit wastefulness and save money at the same time.

Our new reusable bamboo bags are perfect for everyday use.  Bamboo bags are light as a feather and soft as silk, but strong as steel.  That’s right, no more wasting money on paper lunch bags that rip when they become damp.

So, what is so awesome about bamboo?  Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on earth, taking only 60 days to grow 59 feet!  This amazing plant also regenerates without having to replant, while restoring degraded land at the same time.  Bamboo also stores 4 times the CO2 of tees and releases 35% more oxygen.  And possibly the most incredible fact about bamboo: it requires NO chemicals and NO pesticides to grow.

Recyclable Eastar Water Bottles

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

For years, environmental enthusiasts have wondered what to do with your old reusable water bottle if you need to throw it away.  New Wave Enviro now has the answer: The Eastar resin water bottle.  Sick of the color of your reusable water bottle?  If it is made with Eastar resin, it can be recycled.  For whatever reason you have to throw out your old reusable water bottle, instead of throwing it in the trash where the plastic will sit in a landfill for thousands of years, an Eastar bottle can be easily recycled.

New Wave Enviro is designing their water bottles with this new, litter free, Eastar material that has been approved by the FDA and is NSF 51 certified.  Eastar is a glass-like plastic that will not shatter or deform and is BPA free.  This is not uncommon for New Wave Enviro to be on the forefront of the environmental movement; they have been focused on reducing plastic landfill with reusable products waste since their inception.  From the stainless steel water bottles to the biodegradable, corn-based bottles, this is just another advance for this environmentally friendly company.

London Takes a Stand Against Bottled Water

Friday, January 9th, 2009

The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, has launched a city-wide boycott on bottled water.  His “London on Tap” campaign takes aim at the bottled water served to London’s citizens that costs 500 times more than tap water and is 300 times as harmful to the environment.  The problem with the bottled water is the carbon footprint left by the processing of the plastic and the distance the water travels to consumers.  Some bottled water in London traveled from as far as New Zealand.

Britain has taken a hard-line on the issue of bottled water over the past year with the British Environment Minister, Phil Woolas, calling the bottled water industry “morally unacceptable.”  Livingstone has called the high demand for bottled water “a bit of a fad” and says that consumers should not be embarrassed to ask for tap water at restaurants.

In America, we should follow suit and start our own boycott of bottled water.  By purchasing a filter for your tap water, you can have better quality water than bottled for a fraction of the cost.  Using your own, reusable, water bottle will also save the environmental damage caused by the production of the plastic used in bottled water.  It is about time we ended this “fad” and start using more environmentally friendly ways to quench our thirst.

Be a Trend-Setter this Holiday Season

Friday, December 26th, 2008

It really frustrates me to think that people still continue to purchase bottles water, almost religiously.  People line up at stores to purchase water for up to 10,000 times the price of regular tap water, despite the polluting and cancer-causing effects in the long term.  Despite this, Americans buy 2.5 million bottles of water ever HOUR.  Consumers continue to purchase these disposable plastic water bottles out of convenience on the shortest of terms.

Here are some not-so-convenient facts about the bottled water most consumers purchase.  The best selling brands of water in the country are Pepsi’s Aquafina and Coke’s Dasani.  Why are these two brands so successful?  Is it a secret water source in the rain forests or a hidden underground natural spring?  Actually its tap water, filtered tap water.  In fact, Coke and Pepsi are selling consumers their soda products, minus the carbonation and flavoring for the same price!

So this holiday season, start a trend amongst your friends.  Get a stylish stainless steel water bottle from New Wave Enviro and fill up your own filtered tap water.  Your friends drinking bottled water will have the same quality water as you, but for thousands the cost!  And your sleek reusable water bottle will look much more stylish than their disposable plastic water bottles.  Next thing you know, all your friends will be rushing to get their own personalized stainless steel water bottle.
