12 Students Become Ill After Drinking Aquafina

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Most people who drink bottled water do so under the conception that bottled water is much safer than tap water.  But as 12 students from Santa Clara, CA found out, bottled water may still be harmful to your health.  The students purchased their Aquafina, a brand owned by PepsiCo and one of the most popular brands in the world, from a vending machine in their junior high school.

The scare prompted a visit from the FBI hazardous materials team who found the students suffering from headaches, nausea, and dizziness.  This isn’t the first time people have gotten sick from bottled water, there are dozens of cases reported every year.  The water the children drank appeared a little cloudy and tasted odd.  Luckily for these students, they only had to be briefly hospitalized and were later released.

The most shocking part of this story is that this was a very “reputable” bottled water manufacturer.  If one of the most popular bottled water distributors can have contaminated water, this means that the less reputable manufacturers are even more likely to have contaminants in their product.  This story only reinforces the fact that bottled water is not a safe source of water and that a simple 10 stage water filter will give you safe drinking water every time for a fraction of the price.

Why Do YOU Drink Bottled Water?

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Why do people continue to purchase bottled water from the corporations?  Is it because it is cleaner? No, we know that most bottled water companies pump their “fresh” water from public water supplies.  Is it because it tastes better?  No, blind taste tests of bottled water and tap water show that people have no preference between the two.  Is it because it is safer?  No, 1/3 of bottled water was found to contain the same contaminants that people try and avoid by not drinking tap water.  Is it less expensive?  No, it actually costs about 10,000 times the price of tap water at home.  It is even more expensive than gasoline.

Then why do consumers continue to purchase a product with little benefits and a whole lot of environmentally destructive baggage?  Bottled water is purely a gluttonous luxury.  People drink bottled water out of the pure convenience that they do not have to carry around a bottle or to simply avoid using a public water fountain.  I find it embarrassing that the US consumes 8 billion bottles of water a year, leaving 8 billion plastic, non-renewable bottles to be disposed.  If you are reading this and continue to purchase bottled water, it is time to stop and ask yourself why it is necessary to spend 10,000 times the normal price for water only to hurt the environment simply for your convenience.

Ah, The Benefits of Filtered Water

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

As if saving literally hundreds of dollars every year isn’t reason enough to stop drinking bottled water and start using your own 10 stage filter, here are the many health related reasons to buy your own reusable water bottle and filter.

Drinking pure water is the first step in any healthy diet, especially for a child’s proper nutrition while their bodies are developing.  According do the EPA, drinking water that contains lead causes approximately 480,000 learning disorders in children every year in the United States!  Pregnant women must also drink lead free water to prevent serious birth defects.  It is absolutely essential to have the cleanest source of water because there are more than 2100 contaminants possible present in municipal tap water, including poisons.  Some types of cancer can be associated with these toxins found in tap water.  Because water may come from a bottle at a store does not mean that the water is clean and municipal treatment plants cannot always control dangerous forms of bacteria.  Due to this, the only way to absolutely assure that your drinking water is clean is to have a 10 stage filter at your family’s water tap.

Removing Chlorine from Bath Water

Monday, January 5th, 2009

New studies have shown some startling facts about the harmful effects of chlorinated tap water on your body.  The American Journal of Epidemiology reported a study suggesting that areas with higher levels of chlorine in drinking water almost doubles the risk of bladder cancer.  The THMs produced by chlorinated water have been found to cause cancer.  People who regularly bathed in chlorinated water had an increased risk of bladder cancer by 83%.  It was found that absorbing chlorine through the skin is more dangerous than drinking tap water because absorption bypasses the liver which filters out some of the harmful contaminants.  It is essential to filter your bathing water as well as your drinking water to fully protect yourself and your family from the harmful effects of chlorine in tap water.

The solution to removing chlorine from bath water is the Splish Splash Bathtub Filter from New Wave Enviro.  Not only will the filter remove the harmful chlorine from water in just minutes, it will give you softer skin and hair.  De-chlorinated water improves lathering and sudsing, maximizing the effectiveness of your favorite bath products.  Splish Splash is also non-toxic and safe for humans and pets and lasts about 200 baths.

Nanotechnology Making Water More Safe

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

New breakthroughs in nanotechnology could possibly be the solution to create clean drinkable water in regions of the world where drought and water contamination is a problem.  Carbon nanotubes could be able to replace the older materials in water purification systems.  This technology is essential with 1 billion people without access to clean drinking water already.  Two-thirds of the worlds countries are expected to have stress related to the shortage of water by the year 2025.

New technology has been developed to make water purification safer and less expensive.  Nanostructured carbon nanotubes with hollow carbon fibers less than a billionth the width of a single human hair will be able to effectively filter water.  The properties of these nanotubes will only allow very small molecules to pass through, stopping viruses, bacteria, toxic metal ions, and large noxious organic materials.

Along with being safe, this technology is also very efficient.  The tubes allow a high flow rate of water through the filter without stopping up the water pressure.  The power required to operate these systems is also much more efficient than any other current water filtration system, requiring less power.  This technology could be coming to household around the world in the near future to deliver safe and affordable drinking water.

More on Chlorinated Water

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Chances are that your public drinking water has most likely come from either a pond, lake or a stream.  These sources of water contain organic material from decaying algae or dead leaves.  When water is treated with chlorine to kill harmful pollutants, the chlorine also attaches itself to these organic compounds to create organochlorines.  An organochlorine that is formed when chlorine attaches to methane is called chloroform, which is carcinogenic.

This happens because almost always when chlorine attaches itself to organic material, it increases the toxicity of the original organic compound.  Methane is harmless alone, but when a chlorine is attached, it forms a trihalomethane with is a toxic compound.

These organochlorines are naturally produces in small amounts in the environment, but the levels have risen significantly due to the chlorination process in purifying municipal water.  Humans are being exposed to higher and higher levels of these toxic compounds because it is pumped directly into our homes and offices.  With the simple addition of a KDF Media water filter, you can protect yourself and your family for up to 6 years from water chlorination and other harmful compounds in your drinking water.

Pollution in Drinking water

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Did you know that 7 million Americans become sick every year from contaminated drinking water?  This contamination, in some cases, can even be lethal.  Contamination of drinking water is due to old pipes and outdated water treatment facilities.  These alarming rates of water contamination are a call to filter all municipal water sources.

A recent study of 19 US cities has shown that public water supplies pose a risk to the citizens due to the poor conditions of the water infrastructure.  Much of the piping and water treatment facilities are using century old technology.  These old pipes leak and become contaminated with pollutants and bacteria and the old ages filtration systems often fail to remove pesticides, arsenic and other pollutants.  The amount of untreated sewage that enters the environment every year is enough to fill up the Empire State Building and the Madison Square Garden.

Along with these pollutants, a recent study has found that 41 million Americans are exposed to prescription drugs in our drinking water.  The levels of these prescription drugs is far below the prescribed dosages, but the long term effects of these drugs is still unknown.  Studies have found that this long term, low level exposure to prescription drugs has alarming effects on human cells and wildlife.  By using a New Wave Enviro filter, you can filter these contaminants out of your drinking water while saving money at the same time.

Bathing in Chemicals: Why should you filter your shower water?

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

If you are filtering your water to drink, why shouldn’t you also be filtering your bathing water?  The municipal water that is delivered to your home has been treated with chlorine to kill bacteria and viruses that can harm you.  Chlorine was used as a chemical warfare agent during WWI that would burn the lungs of its victims.  When you shower, this chlorine is absorbed into your skin and inhaled in strong concentrations, since chlorine evaporates out of water at such a low temperature.  It is estimated that this shower steam you inhale could have 100 times the amount chlorine than water vapor.  This chlorine is absorbed directly into your blood stream, killing cells.  Showering in unfiltered water amounts to half of the total chlorine exposure we encounter during the day, so filtering your drinking water is addressing just half of the problem.

Chlorine in your shower can have severe negative effects on your health including Carcinogenic effects.  Chlorine exposure in the shower can aggravate respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis.  Chlorine can also irritate the sinuses, eyes, throat and nose.  Chlorine also makes your hair brittle and dry.  Skin conditions from chlorine exposure include: dry, flaky skin, rashes, dandruff and itching.  All of these problems can be solved with the simple installation of a New Wave Enviro filtration system.

With a simple low maintenance KDF media cartridge, this chlorine and other harmful chemicals can be removed for a fresh, clean shower.  KDF cartridges are the latest in filtration technology, lasting up to 6 years!  These cartridges are completely recyclable and require little maintenance.  With the addition of a simple filtration system to your shower, along with a 10 stage water filter for your drinking water, you can eliminate your exposure to chlorine.
